Toni Tennille grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, along with her three younger sisters. Tennille went to Sidney Lanier High School, after which she attended Auburn University in Alabama for two years. She was enrolled in the classical piano studies and was a singer for the university’s big band, the Auburn Knights. In 1959, her family relocated from Alabama to Balboa, California, where she took a job as a clerk, and then as a statistical analyst at the North American Rockwell Corporation. The turning point in Tennille’s career happened in the late 60’s, when she was offered an opportunity to write the music for a musical called Mother Earth, which eventually became a big Broadway hit. In 1971 Tennille met a brilliant young musician – Daryl Dragon – who was at the time a back-up musician for the Beach Boys. He introduced her to the band, and during their 1972 tour she played electric piano with them, founding herself flying all over the US to perform as the one and only “Beach Girl”. In 1973, Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille decided to form The Captain & Tennille, and started playing in Los Angeles clubs. They released a number of singles and albums, which went on to become gold and platinum: “Love Will Keep Us Together” (1975) – winning the 1975 Grammy for Record of the Year – “Song of Joy” (1976), “Come In From the Rain” (1977) and “Make Your Move (1979).

Tony Tennille also released five solo albums: More Than You Know (1984), All Of Me (1987), Never Let Me Go (1991), Things Are Swingin’ (1994) and Incurably Romantic (2001). In 2016, Tennille released her memoirs and promoted it on a book tour.

Tennille married Kenneth Shearer in 1962, but they divorced in 1972. She married her fellow musician and professional partner Daryl Dragon in 1975, living in in Reno, Nevada for more than 30 years before moving to Prescott, in the north of Arizona. Toni Tennille did continue her career, but at that point she had already decided that she enjoyed spending time with her dogs and bringing them to competitions and shows. Tennille, along with her dog Smoky, became a member of a therapy dog team, pledging her time to help patients at hospitals in the local community. After 39 years of marriage, Toni Tennille and Daryl Dragon divorced in July of 2014. Toni now lives with her family and animals, and she still enjoys playing piano. Since 2015, she has lived in Florida.
